Sprinkles’ fleece is mostly of white with some grey, overall it is light in appearance. The staple is very soft, long, with some curly locks. The rugis weighty and substantial with a good depth to it. The backing is a very strong, white, firm felt and would be ideal on a floor or on a sofa to cuddle into. This fleece was turned into Felted Sheepskin with love at our croft on North Ronaldsay. Felted Sheepskins are made purely from the wool sheared off the sheep and look like sheepskin rugs, but the reverse of the rug is made from carded wool that is then hand felted onto the fleece.

Sprinkles was a gentle ewe. As you can see from the photo she had unusual face markings. She had very short legs, and was always last in line. After her first year with us she had a lamb, who we called Peanut, after his gorgeous nutty brown colouring. She was an excellent mother. Unfortunately, Sprinkles died a couple of months after Peanut was born, in a freak accident. Making this the only ever Sprinkles fleece to be in existence. We still miss her everyday.

This fleece came from our Forever Flock - a project that celebrates their unique seaweed diet combined with conservation grazing and vegetarian sheep products. These sheep are kept for their wool, so are saved from the food chain.

These rugs are 100% natural and sustainable and have not been through any harsh cleaning process and as a result they can retain some of their lovely lanolin and smell wonderful. Due to the nature of the product some rugs may shed a little hair or you might even find a small missed piece of debris. Don’t worry this is totally normal – it is after all a 100% natural handmade product that you are buying.

If you really need to wash your felted sheepskin you could soak it in a bath of warm water – then let it drip dry. Stretch the rug out firmly when it is still damp. Let the fleece dry naturally in the sun – this may take a few days.
